The 10 Rules of Success

Rule SEVEN: Take Initiative

To initiate means to start, to make the first move, to make a beginning. Nothing gets started without a start. No journey can commence without taking the first step; no house can be built without laying the first bricks; no writing can be done without writing the first word and no planning can be done without the first thought. To initiate is to start action and every action needs a start and every work done has had a beginning. We can’t reach ‘the end’ without ‘the beginning’.

Getting ideas, setting goals, thinking positive, thinking big, all make good sense but without action they mean nothing.

Stephen R Covey, in his book “The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People”, says, the difference between people who exercise initiative and those who don’t is literally the difference between night and day. I am not talking about a 25 to 50 percent difference in effectiveness; I’m talking about a 5000 plus percent difference, particularly if they are smart, aware and sensitive to others.

If I want to set up a big business of my own and for that I have studied and planned everything in detail; the market, the place, the resources, the phases of growth, the target, the prospects, the time it will take and have everything ready, but if I keep postponing to initiate the venture it will not get started. And if I do not start it, I will achieve nothing but frustration. There is nothing more frustration than inaction and no amount of planning is worth anything if it has not been acted upon. A small dream accomplished is better than a big dream dreamt.

“A great deal of talent is lost in this world for the want of a little courage”. –Sydney Smith-

The best builder of confidence is action, the best generator of ideas is action, the best way to reach your goal is action, and the best way to make your dream come true is also action. Action leads to action, this is the law of motion. It is unchangeable and universal.

You can’t start walking till you stand up and take the first step; you can’t write till you pick up a pen and put it to paper; your fan won’t work till you switch it on; you can’t cook till you light the gas; you can’t work till you lift your hand. Nothing will get done till you take the initiative to do it.

The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up and sprint. Always remember it is you, and only you, who have to make the start.

Just keep a few of these tips in mind and get going.

1. Be a man of action; do not hesitate to take the first step. Every ‘end’ has to have a ‘beginning’.
2. If you want to be a leader, take the first step and start moving.
3. A good idea has no meaning unless it has been acted upon. It is better to build a small cottage than to build castles in the air.
4. The worst enemy of initiative is lack of courage and getting started is the best way to overcome it.
5. Do today what you plan for tomorrow and see how it works wonders.
